MND physiotherapy · Western Sydney and The Hills
Tandem Physio provides home and community-based physiotherapy for adults living with motor neurone disease (MND) across Western Sydney and The Hills District.
Support as needs change
Physiotherapy focuses on supporting mobility, comfort, participation and safer everyday routines. Goals are guided by what matters to the person, their current abilities and the support available at home.
As MND progresses, the plan may shift from maintaining activity to adapting transfers, positioning, equipment and carer support. Review is guided by changes in function, fatigue and priorities, rather than a fixed exercise programme.
Care is provided by Chris Burgess, Tandem’s Principal Physiotherapist. Read About Chris for his background and clinical approach.
Assessment at home
Assess everyday tasks, spaces, equipment and support routines at home.
Review walking, balance, falls risk and movement between beds, chairs and other everyday surfaces, including the assistance needed.
Tailor movement, range-of-motion work and activity to current capacity and goals. Exercise is adjusted to avoid overexertion, excessive fatigue and pain, with review as needs change.
Consider movement, joint range and supported positions that may improve comfort and make everyday care easier, alongside the wider team’s advice.
Assess and trial mobility aids where appropriate, and contribute physiotherapy advice on transfers, standing and positioning. Complex seating, assistive technology (AT) and home-modification needs are addressed collaboratively with occupational therapists and relevant specialists.
Provide practical guidance on agreed mobility, transfer, positioning and exercise strategies, taking account of the person’s preferences and the support available.
Review changes in function and support needs, and provide clinically appropriate recommendations linked to everyday tasks, risks and goals.
Multidisciplinary care
With consent, Tandem can liaise with the person’s neurologist or MND clinic, GP, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, respiratory team, MND advisor, support coordinator and other treating clinicians.
Sharing functional changes and practical recommendations helps the team plan ahead and coordinate support. Physiotherapy complements ongoing medical and specialist MND care.
